An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge or corner of a toenail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, swelling, and sometimes infection. This condition commonly affects the big toe but can occur in other toes as well. Risk factors for ingrown toenails include improper nail trimming, tight or ill-fitting shoes, and injury to the toe. Treatment can range from soaking the foot and wearing loose footwear to medical treatment for more severe cases. In persistent cases, surgical intervention may be required to remove part or all of the toenail.
